When Strawberry Switchblade started to make an album, it was very different from the bright electronica of the end result.
The first proper sessions were with the band they’d been touring with, featuring Simon Booth (guitar), John Cook (bass),and Roy Dodds (drums). The producer was Robin Millar, who had just had huge success with albums by Sade and Fine Young Cannibals.
These two tracks were recorded and it was decided to try another producer. These versions have never been officially released.
Both songs were re-recorded with new producer David Motion – Secrets was included on the final album, Poor Hearts was released as the B-side of Who Knows What Love Is?

Who Knows What Love Is? – David Motion version
This is the original version of the song, recorded during the main sessions for the album. It was deemed too sharp and percussive, so was re-recorded with Phil Thornalley producing, and that version was released on the album and as a single. Thornalley also produced Let Her Go.
This version has never been officially released, apart from a short instrumental section that appears on the album as the penultimate track, Who Knows What Love Is? (Reprise).

Jolene – Cheggers version
This is a bit odd, but when they went on kids’ TV show Cheggers Plays Pop to mime a performance of Jolene, the version used was neither the single nor the earlier BBC session. I’ve no idea where it came from and haven’t heard it anywhere else.
